MobileMe: what we learned

“Something entirely new” is how Steve Jobs described MobileMe (the successor to .Mac). Phil Schiller was in charge of describing MobileMe to us during WWDC. Here’s what we learned:

It’s ‘exchange for the rest of us’, in that it offers Push email, contact, and calendar support. Changes made on to a contact on the go are immediately changed on the server. Email is immediately pushed down to the Phone or computer.

Everything syncs well with the computer (Outlook on a PC; iCal, Address Book and Mail on a Mac), but the web application is what really shines.

Phil demoed the web applications for Mail, Contacts, and Calendar, and all look very similar to their respective counterparts in Mac OS X.

There is support for Photo’s as well, very similar to the current Web Gallery features of .Mac

iDisk support is still there, now with 20GB of storage and you can access files on any computer connected to MobileMe.

Available for $99 per-year, current .Mac users will switch automatically keeping the same addresses.
