Verizon Wireless buys Alltel – now largest US carrier
After rumors circulated yesterday, Verizon Wireless is now confirming their acquisition of Alltel for around $6 billion. Alltel serves 13 million customers in 34 states and Verizon serves 67.2 million customers. Verizon will absorb Alltel’s customers bringing Verizon’s new total customers to over 80 million, topping AT&T’s reported 71 million making Verizon the new leader of US carriers. The deal brings major benefits to both services: Alltel’s customers will now enjoy Verizon’s more advanced multi-media features, while Verizon’s customers will be able to branch into the ‘57 primarily rural markets’ that Verizon doesn’t cover. The merger will go rather seamlessly, due to both networks using CDMA. The target completion for the merger is by the end of the current year.
