.Mac to face complete overhaul, relaunch as Mobile Me or Me

Starting this weekend, rumors of a .Mac overhaul started buzzing around. The service, which hasn’t really had a complete UI change but just slight feature bumps, is in need of a big upgrade and it seems Apple is ready to do that. Starting with strings of code found in the latest Mac OS X update and iPhone SDK beta showing filler names listed instead of .Mac, more code was found in the iPhone beta containing Mobile Me as the name of the new service. Apparently, the revamp will make the service more Exchange-like. Evidence of ‘push’ Mail, Contacts, and Calendar have been seen in the latest iPhone 2.0 firmware beta. Apple purchased the domain name for Me.com recently, as well as MobileMe.com. Both domains were undoubtly very expensive and wouldn’t be purchased unless a specific plan was meant for both. With the purchase of both Me and MobileMe, Apple could be pushing the new service name and branding as ‘Me’, and ‘Mobile Me’ would be the mobile version. With only a week until WWDC, where most-likely all rumors about .Mac and the 3G iPhone will clear up, we shall find out soon what the fate of .Mac really is.
