Contact searching found in iPhone firmware 2.0 during SDK event

picture-22.jpg

So, while Phil Schiller was talking about the new Enterprise features that were going to be released on the iPhone during the SDK event on March 6th, I noticed a new feature that was added into the Contacts section of the Phone application.  It is a little spotlight icon right above the A on the alphabet. We have no clue how search will be implemented into iPhone, maybe a little pop-up, but it will definitely be helpful to Enterprise users who have thousands of contacts. It is a very smart addition to the iPhone software, but how come nothing was said about it? But who cares if they didn’t say anything about it, search is finally coming to iPhone. To see this for yourself, you can go to 9 minutes and 30 seconds in on the Quicktime video of the event. What’s weird is that during the demo’s of Contacts, you can’t see the spotlight icon, but in the screenshot that he presents you can see the spotlight icon. Maybe Apple has planned to have search in the final 2.0, but it wasn’t ready for the demo.

  1. Given the location of the search icon, I’d assume there’s just a search control/toolbar at the very top of the list, which filters the view below. Since it wasn’t visible in the demo, you probably have to scroll up to see it.

Modal Pop-ups suck, so I hope it doesn’t use them

  3. [...] [...]

  4. I think the iPhone 2.0 update is going to have a lot more than just the App Store and the enterprise features… I wouldn’t be surprised to see some of the other things people have been clamoring for (voice dialing, for one) in the actual release — the announcements this week were really all things that needed to be out there to give developers and businesses enough lead time to be ready when the true update dropped.

What’s sad, though, is that copy/paste doesn’t look like it’s coming anytime soon — if it was on the radar, it would be part of the SDK, so 3rd-party applications could build in clipboard support, but it’s not.

  21. I suspect that as this has appeared, Spotlight may have been added to this release of the iPhone port of OS X (ie compiled for the ARM platform). This may mean that file searching, image searching, etc may follow, which would improve the iPhone dramatically.

  22. Is it so hard to believe that it’s just the caption of the ‘letter’ column? If you touch the letter you sort of search for it. That’s exactly the way it is now…
