Time Capsule unboxing and initial thoughts

I’ve been out looking for a Time Capsule since its been shipping and I finally found an Apple Store with a 1TB model in stock. I set it up very quickly and it basically just works. You can name the network one thing with its own password, the hard drive another name with its own password, and the actual Time Capsule a third name with its own password. The setup process is really simple too. Just plug in your ethernet cable and power cord, put the Install CD in, and then once you install AirPort Utility, open it. Then, follow the onscreen instructions. From there, its pretty simple. Read more for info about speed and data transfer.

After a couple of hours -  I’ve finally finished perfecting all of my settings and I’ve actually got a chance to test the speed. And it didn’t impress me that much. Now, just to clarify, I’ve been downloading tons of stuff (particularly the iPhone SDK and Developer Videos from iTunes) and using my network to transfer files, but it still didn’t really scream super fast. I did come from directly using the Ethernet port, though, so my expectations were high. I also got a chance to test how Time Machine works with it, and it really does work well. You just open Time Machine preferences, click Change Disk, and select your Time Capsule. And when Apple says the initial back-up could take overnight or longer…” they really do mean it. I’ll have more posted soon, but for now I’ve decided to move my Time Capsule to another room with another Ethernet port so my computer will get the higher speeds of an actual cable.
