MacBook Air – hands on
So, I just popped in at my local Apple store. They’ve got three display models of the MacBook Air, none in stock. Luckily for me, they weren’t being crowded around by adoring fans 24-7 as I thought they would be. The laptop is really tiny. It’s much smaller than I thought it would be and it really is super thin. When you actually hold it in your hands, it feels great and its light as a feather. The keyboard has a really nice feel and the backlit-illumination to the keyboard is great. The keyboard has the new function keys like the one’s on the iMac keyboards (music buttons, dashboard and expose icons), too. The trackpad works well, but the new MultiTouch functions don’t work with everything. Once Apple lets other companies use it in their software, then it will really be great. If you close the laptop and then wait a minute and open it, it turns on in about a second. I used both the 1.6Ghz and 1.8Ghz models, and they both are faster than I expected. I ran iMovie on both models and the loads time were basically the same speed as the 2.8Ghz iMac I use day-to-day, I think the 2GB of RAM installed really helped for that extra speediness. I’ve got a bunch of photo’s in the rest of the post, so click on for those photos.
