O2 is officially the carrier of the iPhone in Ireland, they announced today. Rumors floated around the net yesterday after files indicating the network in the 1.1.4 firmware upgrade. iPhone will retail for €399 and €499 for the 8GB and 16GB respectively. Apple introduced iPhone and iPod touch firmware 1.1.4 today, just specifying “Bug fixes” as details about the update. The update has no big changes, but it does fix bugs with Bluetooth, SMS, and apparently improves the cell signal. iTunes just overpassed Best Buy and is now the #2 music retailer in the US, trailing behind Walmart, based on the latest NPD Group data. Also, Apple announced that there are now over 50 million iTunes customers and over 4 billion songs have been downloaded.

Apple finally updated the MacBook and MacBook Pro today, giving both machines a faster CPU, and giving the Pro Multi-Touch. Apple added a 2GB iPod shuffle to the line last week, and now its shipping. It comes in the same colors as the 1GB and is $10 cheaper than the old $79 price tag for the old 1GB model.

During one of the recent iTunes Video Spotlight emails Apple sends out, Apple announced that every Thursday there would be a new $0.99 movie rental available. The special price is good Thursdays until Mondays, but the regular movie rental rules still apply.

Straight from Toshiba’s press conference happening right now in Japan, before they even started speaking, “Toshiba Announces Discontinuation of HD DVD Businesses.” They will no longer “develop, manufacture and market HD DVD players and recorders.” They will cease production approximately March 2008, HD DVD disks for applications and games will end then as well.
