Garmin releases nüvifone: GPS and Phone combined
Surprisingly, Garmin (the company known for their GPS Navigation systems) has stumbled upon the phone market. The nuvifone, a GSM HSPDA smartphone, is very iPhone-like and runs its own operating system. The phone, not surprisingly, uses GPS navigation as the main part of its OS. No carrier has been announced, but AT&T seems like its got a good shot to carry the phone since it’s network matches the specs. The home screen is very simple: “Call”, “Search”, and “Navigation” main icons with smaller “Browser”, “SMS”, “Email”, and “Tools” icons to the side. Garmin says that the phone should be available in Q3 2008, but no price has been announced.
Some features included are:
- WiFi and bluetooth built-in
- 3.5-inch touchscreen
- Google local search
- Full internet (iPhone style)
- Instant messaging, texting, and email
- Garmin Online - real-time traffic, weather, fuel prices, stock prices, sports scores, etc…
- Built-in video camera, MP3 and MPEG4/AAC
