So Rock Band was probably one of the biggest gifts this holiday season, considering that it was probably one of the coolest new things. I tried it first on the Rock Band tour bus with a bunch of friends, after playing that I knew it was pretty cool. I had tried vocals and this thing really picks up your pitch, it knows how to grade you on hitting the right notes, or on singing the right lyrics. After that test-run, I decided to order it.
It comes packaged in a big box, but it deserves to be big considering the drum set, guitar, microphone, and the actual game crammed inside. So I immediately set it up and tried it. I tried the guitar first. The actual guitar isn’t as amazing as I would’ve liked it to be. The whammy bar is a little too big for my taste and the strum bar isn’t great for me, but its okay. I do like it better than the current Guitar Hero 3 guitar though. So what I ended up doing for the guitar is plugging in my old Guitar Hero 2 guitar, which was perfect. The actual game is almost an exact copy of playing Guitar Hero, just different design and graphics. So the guitar is pretty basic. The drums are amazing though. The software works the same as the guitar, but instead of strumming and holding fret buttons, you hit the drums and the foot pedal (which make five sensors, just like guitar’s five fret buttons.) Playing the drums is really exhilarating, though. Its very fun and it helps get anger out if you want to just hit the pads hard, but don’t make them brake. Lastly, the vocals. The microphone is a basic microphone (except for the Rock Band logo). Since the whole contraption uses USB ports, you can use your own microphone if you prefer. The microphone’s software is by far the coolest though. It gives you the words and the pitch on how to sing them, and you go from there. It’s amazing to watch the little meter telling you if you’re on pitch or off pitch and how good you are. When there are long no singing moments, you tap the microphone for a “solo period” where it gives you a percentage on how many of these taps you’ve hit. Every mode (guitar, drums, vocals) can be played single, so don’t worry about that. There’s very little negatives for Rock Band and it ensures you and you’re friends will have a blast playing. Rock Band retails for $169.99 and is available for Xbox 360 and PS3.
