XO Laptop by OLPC review - great buy for the price

Well, I’ve had my XO for about a week now and I think I’m ready to give a verdict. The things really amazing for what its trying to do. For the average consumer, it works too. So if your in the market for a laptop, I would buy it. BUT - there’s a catch. I would only buy it if you have a regular computer around too.The laptop only has one gigabyte of storage built-in, but this is upgradable threw the SD card slot under the screen. The computer also runs on a LINUX operating system, which is not what the average consumer is used to. Don’t get me wrong, the OS is great and easy to use, it’s just different. For example, it doesn’t use a normal file system, it uses “the journal.” The journal is where “activities” (kind of like files) are saved. If you open write and want to write a document, it’s saved in the journal. If you then want to transfer that document to a USB drive, it would pop up in the journal and you could drag it over. The laptop doesn’t do everything a normal computer can do either, it doesn’t have an address book or calendar, or have a photo viewer, or a real system preferences. Since the laptop is open-source, however, people can write applications for it and then run them. If you want to make any big changes, you have to use terminal and write code, which isn’t that easy for the average person. So my recommendation is that if you don’t have a computer, which you probably do since you’re reading this, don’t buy it.IF YOU DO HAVE A COMPUTER, BUY IT! It’s not only for a great cause, but it works really well for what you want it to do. I have a 24 inch iMac and I wanted this to bring to school for writing documents, notes, etc. So this is a perfect substitution for a real $1500 Macbook which would be a waste since a have an amazing desktop computer at home. For $400, buy this computer, send one to a kid in a developing country, and use this, because it works great.Until December 31, laptopgiving.org sells the laptop through its Give 1 Get 1 program. BUY IT, IT WORKS GREAT, AND ITS FOR AN AMAZING CAUSE. for more our coverage of the XO, go to blargkaboom on youtube and look at our videos of the laptop.

  1. The OLPC is superb; however, I don’t have enough money to participate in the Buy 1 Give 1 deal…

… Maybe there will be a commercial product similar to the XO? I don’t know.

Could you test ZSNES, a SNES emulator on the OLPC?… and make a video? I would greatly appreciate it. Also, e-mail me whenever the video’s up. ^_^

  3. First off, I have an XO, and I love it. Now, two things, one, you spelled through, as ‘threw”, and two, they let you use your xo, at school? I want my teachers to let me do that.

P.S. Love the video reviews, r u gonna make a new one on the xo?
